★★★★★ What a night! The opening of CHICAGO The Musical at Artscape was nothing short of dazzling. It was the kind of evening that reminds you why live theatre is pure magic. From the glittering red carpet to the thunderous final ovation, it was a masterful celebration of theatre at its very best.
The atmosphere was electric. Familiar faces like Marc Lottering, Siv Ngesi, KFM’s Sibs and Ramez, and Cape Talk’s Lester Kiewit brought extra sparkle to an already star-studded crowd. The buzz of anticipation was palpable before the curtain even rose. And when it finally did, the audience was transported into the sultry, scandalous world of 1920s Chicago filled with jazz, intrigue, and show-stopping brilliance.

A Night of Showstopping Performances
The cast delivered performances that were nothing short of mesmerising. Kiruna-Lind Devar sparkled as Roxie Hart, bringing just the right mix of cheeky charm and ruthless ambition to the role. Opposite her, Samantha Peo’s return as Velma Kelly was a triumph, her powerhouse presence and sizzling vocals igniting the stage with every number.
Jonathan Roxmouth embodied Billy Flynn with irresistible charisma, balancing charm and cunning so seamlessly that the audience hung on his every word. Tankiso Mamabolo’s Matron Mama Morton was a scene-stealer, her commanding vocals shaking the theatre to its core, while Dean de Klerk gave Amos Hart such disarming sincerity that his solo left the crowd in stunned admiration.
And then came the moment everyone anticipated: “Cell Block Tango.” From the very first “pop,” the theatre erupted. The energy was electric, the choreography razor-sharp, and the applause deafening. For those unforgettable minutes, it truly felt as though Broadway itself had come to Cape Town
The Magic Beyond the Stage
I’ve seen the movie version of CHICAGO, but nothing compares to experiencing it live on stage. The atmosphere, the energy, the sheer power of the cast performing just metres away is theatre on an entirely different level of magic. You don’t simply watch it; you feel it.
The audience laughed at the razor-sharp one-liners, gasped at the twists, and cheered wildly after every showstopper. By the final curtain, the energy in the theatre was electric. This wasn’t just a performance, it was an experience everyone was swept into.
And yes, a few celebs were spotted grooving along in their seats. When theatre is this good, sitting still is simply not an option.

Why This CHICAGO Is Unmissable
CHICAGO is sultry, satirical and scandalously entertaining. With timeless showstoppers like “All That Jazz”, “Razzle Dazzle” and “Cell Block Tango”, this production proves as sharp and relevant today as when it first debuted. Themes of ambition, fame and corruption unfold through dazzling choreography, a sensational live band and a cast performing at the very peak of their craft.
Already crowned with six Tonys, two Oliviers, one Grammy, two Baftas, and six Academy Awards, CHICAGO has long secured its place as one of the world’s most iconic musicals. Now, this phenomenal cast takes it to new heights, delivering a production bold enough to stand on any international stage.
